ZOOLOGY 260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Hydrothermal Vent, Mesopredator, Trophic Cascade
Document Summary
Trophic- of or relating to feeding and nutrition. All models are wrong but some are more useful than others. Biomass- abundance of organisms multiplied by how much mass they have. Mass of individuals multiplied by their abundance. Ex: 10^1 apex, 10^2 consumers, 10^3 producers. A few special species promote biodiversity= # of species in an area. Ecosystem engineer= an organism that changes physical environments structurally. Keystone species= an organism that interacts with others disproportionate to its numbers. Fewer predators, more consumers/herbivores, fewer producers lighter/less green, smaller font. Herbivory (trophic behavior)- grazers eat algae, grass, etc. , browsers eat leaves, shrubs, etc. Trophic cascade- series of top-down changes in trophic relationships. Trophic downgrading- diminished biodiversity following loss of apex consumers. Microsite- precise location at the scale of the organism; choice for resting, feeding, moving, etc. Time spent vigilant (detecting danger) and time spent feeding. Fear or stress (physiological response) alters reproduction and survival.
