BIOLOGY 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cyanobacteria, Escherichia Coli, Cell Theory
Document Summary
Cell theory: all living organisms are made up of one or more cells and all cells arise from other pre-existing cells. Cell: the smallest unit of life that can function independently and perform all the necessary functions of life, including reproducing itself. Osmosis: is the passive diffusion of water across a membrane. Hypertonic: bigger on the outside but will lose weight. Prokaryotic cell: literal meaning is before a nucleus . Does not have a nucleus; its dna simply resides in the middle of the cell, and has no membrane bound organelles. Examples: bacteria, blue green algae, staph infection, e coli. Has a central control structure called a nucleus, which contains the cell"s dna. Examples: animals, plants, fungi, and single cell organisms. Eukaryotic cells have compartments with specialized functions. The largest/ prominent organelle in most eukaryotic cells. Dna/rna is made and processed in the nucleus. Lysosomes: the cell"s garbage disposals for cells digesting and recycling cellular waste products and consumed materials.
