PSYC 3450 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Carl Jung, Collective Unconscious, Personal Unconscious
Document Summary
Originally freud"s most valued student and colleague. Almost a father-son relationship; jung was suppose to takeover after freud. Freud did not like the change that jung attempted - relationship deteriorated over time. However they diverged on several points and had a falling out. He placed much more emphasis on cultural and spiritual factors; instead of biological. Personal unconscious: combination of freud"s preconscious and unconscious; does not matter how easy or difficult it is to find. Collective unconscious: contains traces of our ancestral past: shared myths and legends and experience of all humanity; believed all human beings have access to this shared lore history legends. Jung"s cultural studies led him to believe the collective unconscious affected our personality. Persona: element of personality shown to others; a mask. Focused on children attempting to overcome feelings of inferiority by striving for superiority. Inability to do so results in becoming discouraged; not fitting in, or not having a niche.
