Document Summary

In the previous weeks, we have examined the diversity of life from its broadest level and categorized the major groups of organisms according to their phylogenetic relationships. Today we will examine one of the important groups of organisms in greater detail. One is that they are the major group of producers (i. e. organisms that capture energy from abiotic sources like the sun and store it in the form of biological chemical energy) on land. They also are the predominant force shaping terrestrial ecosystems since they provide the structural base on which most animals live and feed. They also provide an interesting contrast to animals in the ways that they have adapted their reproductive strategy to take advantage of the environments within which they live. Unlike animals, all plants exhibit alternation of generations. One generation of the organism is haploid (thegametophye), the next is diploid (the sporophyte) (figure 1).
