[note: the idea of evolution has been around for much longer than darwin; darwin provided the mechanism and more explanation] Evolution explains: how all living things are related, how existing species adapt to their environment, how new species arise. [so far we have focused on how biological processes work; evolution helps us understand why they work the way they do] Similar yet different : ex. on journey, darwin discovers glyptodont: fossil ancestor to the armadillo, what would create the difference, **varied environments (ex. Galapagos islands: adaptation of galapagos tortoises varied adaptation to varied environments of two different islands, diversity of darwin"s finches. Survival of the fittest? (and reproduction: reproduction of favorable, strong traits which enable survival. Descent with modification by means of artificial selection: ex. pigeons (which darwin bred); ex. belief that all modern dogs descend from the gray wolf, selectively breeding to amplify certain characteristics and variation.
