Immediate setting: planned speech that day, heard about mlk"s assassination prior to his plane landing, decided to still continue with speaking despite security dangers/race riots. Audience consisted mainly of african americans; many radical groups present. Indianapolis, indiana - heart of the inner-city (his intended support) From a very famous, almost royal american family. Presidential campaign began march 16, 1968 - less than a month beforehand (assassinated two months after speech) tangential. Brother killed five years prior--mentioned in speech. Insisted he go on with the speech without police. Had told a black person at a rally earlier that the overwhelming white population could be trusted and later felt guilty when mlk was shot by a white man.
