Document Summary
Family systems theory - dr. murray bowen. The family is an emotional unit of interlocking relationships with the individuals as part of that unit rather than as autonomous psychological entities. The family is a social system with structure & predictability that both promotes and impairs the functioning of members. Members have direct, indirect, and reciprocal influence on each other. The whole is more than the sum of its parts. Relationships among members have patterns: families have structure and roles, patterns develop and change over time. Social systems both create and relieve anxiety: chronic general fear of what could go wrong (ongoing, acute: specific fear of an upcoming event (limited duration) Differentiation: to be an emotionally separate person, with the ability to think, feel and act for oneself. Togetherness: to be emotionally connected to others. Able to discard old beliefs in favor of newer, more complex beliefs. Responsible for self and resists being over-responsible for others.
