Knowledge gap on women and aids : less is known about the chronicle of the disease in women. Aids was a disease of men: attributed to historical accident. Aids cases involving women did not count for as much. One explanation: many women with aids had been robbed of their voices long before hiv appeared to further complicate their lives. In setting of extreme elitism, they were poor, in settings of racism they were women of color, in settings of sexism they were women. Aids is the leading cause of death among african american women living in the us. Heroin use ties to poverty structured by racism. In the us, hiv has moved almost unimpededly through poor communities of color. The synergism of plagues: inner-city poor neighborhoods often shelter a vigorous drug trade, numerous opportunities for strangers to engage in drug-mediated, unprotected sex, and numerous locations where these and other risk behaviors go virtually unchallenged.
