PSY-1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Facial Muscles, Crying, Heritability
Document Summary
Disgust was recognized by darwin as a universal emotion, but what we consider disgusting can vary tremendously by culture. Because they carry risk of disease and contagion - survival by aversion. Leads naturally to disgust of dead things, bad hygiene, body-envelope violations, certain sex-acts. Bad hygiene - less likely that offspring will survive. Can be overridden by lust, fame & fortune. Envy is coveting something or someone that somebody else has. Jealousy is wanting something or someone that somebody else has but you think belongs to you. A flash of anger gives us energy and initiative to fight or otherwise take action when necessary. Enjoyment that comes from seeing or hearing about the troubles of others. More common in people with low self esteem. Calibrated to the gravity of the misfortunate. Not an emotion, but you have an emotional experience when you are laughing and expressing emotional experiences to others.
