SOC-1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Hidden Curriculum
Document Summary
Lecture 10: gender and society: sex gender, sex refers to the biological differences between males and females, such as assigned at birth, gender is not reducible to biological differences. It is another social construct that has a list of norms, roles, and behaviors that associated with being male or female: gender roles are attitudes or behaviors that are considered male or female in a specific culture. They way we act is more related to gender differences than that of sex. There are behaviors that are considered appropriately male or female : gender roles are continuously learned and relearned, gender roles are becoming more and more fluid as time goes by. They are an enormous social influence: history textbooks, tv shows, and cartoons are more likely to be dominated by male figures, women told faster to drop a statistics course. We look at this incorrectly: more often than not this is seen as more unequal in the side of men.
