BIOL 151 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Archaea, Heritability, Chromosome
Document Summary
Integrated actions of many cells within organ/body. How do giving things interact in communities. Evolutionary adaptation: adapting is changing to survive immediate threats. All systems work together to create individual. Observations + questions -> hypothesis (educated guess) -> predict -> obtain evidence -> (if info supports many times) theory. Qualitative data takes form of recorded descriptions. Quantitative data is numerical measurements organized as tables & graphs: ex: taking a picture is qualitative. Hypothesis - tentative answer to a well-framed scienti c question. Inductive reasoning - draws conclusions through logical process of induction: repeated speci c observations can lead to important generalizations. Deductive reasoning uses general premises to make speci c predictions: initial observation may give rise to multiple hypotheses, we can never prove a hypothesis as true. Once hypothesis has been supported been by large body of experiments, it can become a theory. Living organisms: complex, respond, reproduce, capacity to evolve. Life requires transfer & transformation of energy & matter.
