One of his ships was damaged from hitting a reef, so cc"s men showed off their artillery by sinking it themselves: he left 40 of his men behind. When he came back to get them, he found out they had all died because their relationship with the natives went downhill: when cc returned to spain, he was hailed as a superhero .
