Problems in Adolescence
Problem types in Adolescents
Externalizing problems
Risk that comes from undercontrol by parents (undercontrol: parenting that is
very lax)
Risk taking/problem behaviors: risky driving, substance use
Delinquency and crime
Life course VS. adolescent limited crime
Life course is delinquency throughout life, adolescent limited is
just in adolescence
Influences include various forms of socialization including family, friends/peers,
school, neighborhood, religious beliefs.
Risks in childhood+early adolescence: ADHD, conduct disorders,
anxiety/depression are early markers.
Internalizing problems
Risk that comes from overcontrol by parents (very strict parenting)
Depression and anxiety
Depression: depressed mood vs. major depressive disorder/episode
First: enduring period of sadness without any other symptoms
Latter: SIGNIFICANT and PERSISTENT sadness + suicidal
thoughts
Diathesis Stress Model: the stresses of adolescents TURN ON genetic
markers in people that already code for depression
Virginia: 45/50 in terms of worst states with mental health crises
6/10 youth with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) don’t receive treatment
Bipolar disorders - rates in teens almost as high as adults
Presence of mood disorders may precede other behavioral problems
Eating disorders - anorexia nervosa and bulimia
General susceptibility to internalizing disorders
Mostly females (90% of people with an ED are female)
Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Early drinking increases risk for alcoholism
TEENS can drink FAR more than adults before they get sleepy enough to
stop, so they will do more significant damage to their livers and internal
organs when they binge drink.
Suicide
Teenage boys are more likely to kill themselves
