Three main ways of thinking about the cause of discrimination. People are raised to value the dominant cultural values/traits. Dominant group discriminates against non-dominant group to maintain power. Generally speaking, racism refers to the preference for members of a particular race to the disadvantage of people who are not of that race. Power is key (as it is with all of the -isms) People of all races can think and act in discriminatory ways, and be the target of discrimination. Macro-aggressions are big, very obvious forms of discrimination (ex. Early laws defined slaves as personal property. The dred scott decision (1857) held that no person of african origin could claim us citizenship, and therefore the federal government offered no protections. African americans were excluded from benefits under the civil war pension act. The freedman"s bureau was designed to be temporary.
