Social construction: people who have power in society are able to define a specific group"s characteristics and determine a person"s value. These perceptions of the group and others are accepted by society. Race: a term to describe all ethnic groups. Ethnic groups: groups of people that share common cultural patterns or national origins. Example: people who have spanish-speaking ancestors are often classified. 50 years ago the us population was 90% caucasian. This population is expected to decline beginning in 2024. The latino population is expected to increase by double. Age of citizens will begin to shift. Emphasis on persons with disabilities will be more widely apparent. Information on sexual orientation will become more publicized. Colonization: settlement and occupation of a new country. Immigration: movement of people away from their native lands to become permanent residents of another country. Refugees: person fleeing from persecution from countries considered to be oppressive.
