Document Summary

Childhood: defined as the first period in life that is from birth to age 18. We must understand children socially, cognitively, physically, and emotionally as social workers. Social workers view children as vulnerable population, in which we seek to advocate for due to the greater likelihood that children may face oppression and discrimination. Children have a higher sense of vulnerability, as they rely on others to guide them and fulfill their needs. A 10 year old cannot make a rational decision to go forward with a surgery, as they are not developmentally able to understand the risks and benefits of a procedure and the impact it may have on them. Family: system of people who have connections (hereditary and non-hereditary) that have impactful relationships. Social workers view all members of the family as important and work outside of the nuclear system (mom, dad, siblings).
