Australia: marsupials v. placental mammals: boodie (native marsupial) outcompeted by placental. Crayfish and ph of lakes: rusty crayfish found primarily in lakes with a ph above 5. 5, suggesting a preference for basic water conditions. Ecological niche: is the role and position a species has in its environment; how it meets its needs for food and shelter, how it survives, and how it reproduces. A species" niche includes all of its interactions with the biotic and abiotic factors of its environment. Case study: 3 protist species: p. aurelia, p. bursaria, p. caudatum all feed on bacteria and yeast which in turn fed on the oatmeal medium in the culture tube. The way they all grow in the tube yield info about which ones occupy similar niches. Bacteria occurred in the more o rich part of the culture tube, and the yeast in the o poor.
