Document Summary

Characteristics of living things: complex carbon molecules including nucleic acids; dna & rna, dna: 6 billion; protein; universal code in all living things, most have rna& dna both. Kingdoms of life: prokaryotes: no true nucleus. Eukaryotes: cells with a defined nucleus: protista: single celled organisms, plantae: multicellular, photosynthetic (autotrophic); green plants produce oxygen, animalia: multicellular, heterotrophic, generally active, use oxygen and produce co2= animals. Insects are the largest group very diverse: fungi: non-photosynthetic, heterotrophic generally decomposers. Element: basic unit of chem; which cannot be decomspoed; most simple atom in chem: basic elemnts of life. Elemental state: atom that is unchanged by chem reaction. Atom: smallest unit of element- which retains all properties of element. Nucleus cn: proton: positive unit & 1 unit of mass, neutron: particle of no charge- 1 unit of mass. Electron: cn; verylittle mass as a particle. Inert substance: will not enage in chem reasction (i. e helium cannot combine with carbon etc)
