Document Summary
Flower parts are threes or multiples of threes: leaves have smooth edges, often narrow, with parallel veins, vascular bundles are scattered throughout the stem, monocots have a fibrous root system, the seed has one cotyledon (seed leaf) Meristems: undifferentiated plant tissue, cells divide indefinitely by mitosis, give rise to new cells, new cells differentiate. Meristem cells produce one meristem cell and then another cell that differentiates. Apical meristems: roots and shoots, growth in length. Meristem locations are surrounded by protective tissue because they are sensitive. Size of the vacuole: alive at maturity or not. Trichomes (hair-like growths that have numerous functions such as protection from light intensity, deter predators) Paranchyma- the most abundant, live at maturity, have lots of chlorophyll. Collenchyma- alive at maturity, have very thick cell walls that provide flexible support. Sclerenchyma- dead a maturity, strengthen tissues, include fibers. Specialized for conducting water and minerals, made of vessels (more efficient) and tracheids that are both dead at maturity.
