Document Summary

Mrsa- calls life-threating infection, mode of transmission is contact. Bacteria show horizontal gene transmission: humans show vertical gene transmission, bacteria can transfer dna from individuals in the same generation. Conjugation- membranes fuse, allow dna to be transferred from donor to recipient. One virus affects the cell and we get many responses and quick reactions. Polio virus: affects long muscles (arms, legs, diaphragm) , destroys them. Viruses: lytic cycle- cells lyse open, lysogenic cycle- dormant life cycle. Bacterial transformation: did it in a mouse, test tube. Gc: way of expressing dna, is a shorthand version, if gc%=66%, then at%=33, so g=1/3; c=1/3; and a=16%; t= 16% X-ray crystallography- figure out structure of dna, a technique in which you take a crystal of the molecule you are interested in. Gc, can form 3 hydrogen bonds, that means they are held tighter. We go from two to four, four to six, etc strands of dna.
