HTM 3484 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Sex Tourism, Slum Tourism, Cultural Sustainability
Document Summary
Week xii: race, ethnicity, class, & gender in tourism. Tourism: difficulty in defining and separating each group, culture is very fluid, cultural sustainability hard lining cultural relations, being prepared to include at the destination. It is important to note that due to globalization, people are traveling more than ever before. Tourism encourages cultural mixing at an unprecedented level. However, there is a resistance to homogenization through reassertions of culture, ethnicity, and religion. Tourism can be a powerful force as a store teller regarding the representation of a race, ethnicity, or class. It creates a stage for telling a store, often closely tied to local heritage. It also generates an audience who is willing to listen to the story. In many cases, the divisions of power fall along lines of race, ethnicity, and class. Race: representation and interpretation of cultures and historic sites, false perceptions.
