Authoritarian internalizing and externalizing problems with kids (more internalizing) Authoritative best way to parents high expectations for children. Kids are more likely to have external problems (stealing) Negative discipline: love withdrawal, coercion, abuse. Positive discipline: don"t punish, tech, teach natural consequences, ignore certain behaviors, give choices, time-out. Positive discipline: be a good role model, be consistent, be calm and brief, be quick, pick your battle, be realistic, catch your child being good, remind your child that you love them. Discipline tips: teach natural consequences, ignore certain behaviors, give choices, use time-outs. At its worse it can turn into physical abuse. Why do parents do it: tradition/culture/religion, thinks it works/don"t know what else to do, frustration/anger. Does it work: long term vs. short term, what does it teach. How does it affect children"s development: physically cognitively, socially.
