Jonestown - religious cult that moved to the middle of nowhere because people became weirded out: got all the members to commit suicide - extreme conformity. Impressing other member(s) who can vote you into a leadership position. Some groups might have a majority rules norm, where you can deviate from group majority - but you still have to conform to the majority rules norm/rule. Some have more than others - being a driver and stopping for people at a crosswalk = not as much deviation. Informational social influence: when we conform because we see others as a source of information to guide our behaviors. Sherif"s autokinetic research: shined a dot in a dark room and had people in a dark room estimate how far the light is moving. When two people were together in the same room estimating out loud, the estimates were similar. When only one person at a time, then the estimates were very different.
