CHAPTER 13 SCHIZOPHRENIA 2
POSITIVE SYMPTOMS
Delusions
o Gross misrepresentations of reality - don’t see it the way it is
o Disorder of though content - the way they process info
o Granduer - can do more physically and cognitively than physically possible
o Persecution (The Three Christs of Ypsilanti)
Rokeach - three young men suffering from schizo and assessed their beliefs about
Jesus Christ.
All three thought they were Jesus. Forced them to live together -
independent of the reality
o 2 syndromes
o Capgras - someone you know has been replaced by a double
o Cotard - belief that he/she is dead
o Motivational view - defense mechanisms for anxiety
o Deficit view - function of a brain dysfunction
Hallucinations
o Sensory experience in absence of environmental stimuli or input (exercise) - the
imagining thing, but they come out of nowhere
o Can involve all senses
o Most common - auditory
Own vs others voices
Broca's area (speech) activated more than Wernicke's area (hearing and
comprehension)
Prosody (expression of meaning and emotion in language through pitch,
amplitude, pauses etc.)
Hungry? Hot? Cold?
NEGATIVE SYMPTOMS
Absence of insufficiency of normal behavior
25% of patients experience
Symptom cluster
o Avolition (or apathy): inability to initiate and persist in activities, lack of motivation
o Alogia: absence of speech
o Anhedonia: lack of pleasure
o Affective flattening: masks/do not show emotion
DISORGANIZED SYMTPOMS
Erratic behavior that affect many domains
Disorganized speech - cognitive slippage
Tangentiality - starts going off on tangents
Loose association/derailment - things start going off into other directions, like "we were
gonna go hunting, I'll shoot you dead"
Word salad - extreme disorganized speech
Unusual Behavior
Catatonia - wild agitation, wavy flexibility , immobility
Schizophreniform disorder
Schizophrenic symptoms
Few months only
