Stigma - wondering if it is even real. Medicalization (the process by which something that was previously not under medical authority, becomes a part of the medical spectrum. Medicalizing sadness as depression) and the rise of psychology. Mental disorders like depression come along with a narrative that has a certain plot and end. Iatrogenesis - pathologies caused by medicines and medicalization. Tension between what we can see and what is going on inside the person. The reoccurring numbers were an attempt to communicate what was inside. They also helped to show the unpredictability of her disorder. Labeling/categories are prevalent in mental illness because people feel that the mind is essentially the self. (ex. A person is schizophrenic, instead of a person with schizophrenia) People with cancer will become what is called the sick role or, worse, patient.
