Document Summary

The sperm and the egg uniting to form a zygote: occurs in the oviduct area of the fallopian tube that attaches to the ovary. This stage is the rst week following fertilization. Blastocyst contains an inner cell mass which will become the embryo: a ring of attened cells surrounds this serves as a source of nutrients & will become the placenta. For 2 to 3 days, the blastocyst will remain unattached to the uterine wall. Blastocyst attaches to the uterine lining and digests portions of the tissue in order to make a stronger connection. Usually occurs high on the back wall of the uterus. This only occurs if the lining is healthy: iuds and other birth controls will diminish this lining, preventing implantation from occurring. Embryonic stage includes 2nd through 8th week after fertilization: starts at beginning of 2nd week after fertilization when embryo becomes implanted in lining of uterus, this marks beginning of pregnancy .
