Document Summary

Chemistry and the body: all organisms are made of di erent combinations of chemicals, chemical reactions within the body allow for life to exist. All reactions occur within an aqueous environment: water (chemical) makes up 2/3 of the body, hydrogen bonding (in water) is seen in many places throughout the body. Atoms: the smallest unit of matter (in this course) Matter= anything that takes up space: atoms are made of subatomic particles. Protons- positively charged, found in the nucleus. Neutrons- neutral charge, found in the nucleus. Electrons- negatively charged, found around the nucleus. Elements: pure substances, basis of all compounds found on earth, 92 naturally occurring, 20 found in organisms. Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen make up almost all of the atoms in living organisms: atomic number= unchanging number of protons in the atom. Chemical bonds: all atoms want to have 8 total electrons in their shell (valence electrons)
