How statutes are made: federal statutes come from the us congress, a legislator will introduce a bill in his or her house, after passing both house. President has 10 days to sign it. If the president veto"s the bill, 2/3 of the senate and 2/3 of the house vote in favor. Types of law: criminal law: violations of criminal statuses known as penal codes. Government brings an action in court against and individual or entity. The end result is a finding of guilty or non-guilty with possible fines and jail time: civil law: private disputes between individuals or entities. Contract dispute or a negligence action after an automobile accident. Legislative powers: government is made up of three branches, the legislative branch (makes laws, the executive branch (enforces laws, the judicial branch (interprets laws) Statutory interpretation: not always easier to interpret than case law.
