Adjustment to bad events is slower and less complete than adjustment to good ones. But objective predictors are weak: things that don"t matter: health, money, home, marriage, kids, etc. Things that matter: only strong predictor is social network, weaker relationship with religion and, among the poor, money, parenthood paradox: having children reduces happiness. Income has risen substantially in 50 years, but no change in happiness. Mere exposure effect- the more exposure we have to a stimulus, the more we tend to like it: commonly occurring letters, we prefer mirror images; our friends prefer true images. There are three important dimensions for love: passion, motivational aspect of love. Includes physiological reactions: intimacy, the emotional aspect of love, best predictor of strength of the relationship. Includes closeness, sharing, and communication: commitment, the cognitive aspect of love, loyalty, devotion. Four styles of adult attachment that result from early child-parent attachments.
