Three problems: people don"t agree on definition of words, what is most important, how to represent and apply something. Overcoming contested concepts: how to confront 3 pressing issues. Physical things in an area (i. e. woodward ave, rencen, parking meters) as well as social structures that create the physical things. How social constructs lead to how the physical landscape is affected. Lynch"s city types (layouts) (has nothing to do with type of buildings, size of city, shape of buildings) Cosmic: faith or leadership or some common shared value, ideology in a city, i. e. washington, dc based around congress + white house. Three things typically measured in terms of: beautiful. Value: show how beauty changes/stays the same over time, show how usefulness/e i. e. renaissance center in detroit, useful- workplace, beauty- architecture on building, humane- has emotional connection w/ detroit citizens. Defines difference between america/europe due to differences in cultural values.
