Thesis: following the rules , while not all there is to professional ethics, is generally enough for responsible conduct (given the profession"s code of ethics is reasonably well-written, as most are). Rules, especially those of professional ethics, mean something. The meaning is not merely linguistic (like the meaning of most puns). The meaning is not merely propositional (like the meaning of a scientific law, or the propositional meaning of an observational sentence such as it is raining in detroit. ) What rules generally mean, and rules of professional ethics always mean, are acts required, allowed, or forbidden. Rules are guides for to conduct and standards for evaluating conduct. Interpretations of just following the rules of a code of professional/work ethics. Strictly following the rules 14 rules are followed and interpretation of rules is left to others (those in authority)
