Document Summary

Structure and function: biology is the scientific study of life. Evolution is the underlying theme that unifies biology and explains the unity and diversity of life. Structures give clues about what they do and how they work. Chromosomes contain most of a cell"s genetic material in the form of dna. A dna molecule holds 100s to 1000s of genes. Genes (stretches of nucleotides): units of inheritance that transmit information from parents to offspring. Life requires transfer and transformation of energy and matter. Organisms interact with physical factors in the environment and each other- everything is affected. The word science comes from a latin verb meaning (cid:498)to know(cid:499). Inquiry is the search for information and explanation. Quantitative data are recorded measurements which can be organized into tables and graphs. Inductive reasoning draws logical conclusions (generalizations) from a large number of observations microscopic observations. Deductive reasoning extrapolates from general premises to specific predictions.
