Document Summary

Example of an enzyme that is typically found in environmental bacteria. Is used to determine if a bacterium produces the enzyme hydrolase. Hydrolase is used to break down starch into glucose. Glucose is the preferred energy source among bacteria. The enzyme urease can break down the bacteria urea (commonly found in human urine) to carbon dioxide and ammonia. The purpose of this test is to be able to differentiate between bacteria that produces the enzyme urease and those that do not. There will be a color change due to the ph levels changing. Other biochemical reactions (will focus more on these in lab portion of this course in the upcoming weeks) Enzyme that has the ability to break down oxygen molecules. Enzyme that is produced by aerobic bacteria. Enzyme that is for bacteria that needs nitrogen. Most of a cell"s energy is produced from the oxidation of carbohydrates. Glucose is the most commonly used nutrient by bacteria as a carbohydrate.
