Autism spectrum disorder (asd) is characterized by: persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts. Spectrums refers to broad range of symptoms: gifted, severely disabled. May occur as results of genetic, environmental or unknown factor. No medical test, given through clinical diagnosis: lose a skill they once already acquired, no one specific gene linked to it. Have seen it run in families: could have twins, one could have it, one could not. Environmental triggers: person born with genetic vulnerability if exposed to environmental trigger, may include being born prematurely, exposed to alcohol or certain medication when in the womb, epilepsy drug, no conclusive evidence. Misconceptions: vaccines, diet mom was on in pregnancy, no links ^^, preservative used in mercury, nothing to do with how you"re brought up (cid:523)abuse, dad left, etc. , could be referred to as pdd pervasive developmental disorder. Asperger"s syndrome: a neurological disorder on the higher functioning end of the autism spectrum.
