Picture books are most children"s first introduction to literacy and reading. They can offer children ways to learn about the world in ways both big and small; toddlers can learn about concepts such as colors, numbers, and textures with board books such as pat the bunny. Many people assume that picture books are simple. At least one critic claims that because picture books employ two art forms (literary and pictorial) to engage two audiences (child and adult), they are the most complex literary genre. The child audience for picture books often consists of pre- readers, which means that someone else (an older child or adult) must read the words on the page. Pre-reader may create a narrative of his own to go with his interpretation of the pictures, and the story that the child creates may bear little resemblance to the printed text.
