Why are teams so popular: teams outperform individual when task requires multiple skills, judgement, experience, teams can be more motivational. Command groups- determined by organization chart and composed of individuals who report directly to given manager. Task groups- brought together to complete a certain task; often temporary until job is done. Cross-functional teams- bring together knowledge and skills from various areas or groups; members have been trained to do each others jobs. Self-managed teams- essentially independent and take on managerial roles like hiring, planning, scheduling, etc. 5 stages of group development: forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning. Stages are(cid:374)"t always clear/o(cid:374)e at a ti(cid:373)e. Groups can remain at forming or storming because of conflict. Roles- behavior expected of someone with a certain role/position. Norms/conformity- can individuals conform to acceptable standards in a group.
