PSY 384 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Angina Pectoris, Heart Failure, Native Hawaiians
Document Summary
As part of aging, some fat accumulates in and around the heart as well as there is stiffening of the heart muscle. As a result, the amount of blood pumped declines from 5 liters per minute at 20 years of age to 3. 5 liters at 70 years of age. The stiffening of arterial walls is caused by calcification of the arterial walls and less elastic fibers. By the age of 65, most adults experience a 60% to 70% decline in aerobic capacity. It is the leading cause of death (one in three) in all ethnic groups in the united states and in many other countries. Hawaiians have the highest rates of high blood pressure. Asian americans have the lowest rate of heart disease. Rates of cardiovascular disease are declining; however, risk factors like obesity are increasing. Congestive heart failure: occurs when the ability of the heart to contract severely declines along with cardiac output.
