Document Summary
These categories are oten used by geographers and someimes called core-periphery. Heartland- major populaion base (urbanized) with manufacturing, services, etc. Hinterland- usually sparsely populated, resource-based farming, mining, forestry. Oten leads to a split in aitudes between the two areas as hinterlands feels used and a sense of alienaion develops. Split is very obvious in canada as the 401 corridor is the heartland. Also its many provinces as only saskatchewan and new brunswick don"t it at least parially. Canada is made up of seven physiographic regions. 1: northern lowlands- arcic and hudson"s bay. Tundra, coastal swampland, muskeg: appalachian region- most of atlanic canada, hills and low mountains that also runs through. Eastern us, also a coastal region with small farms, forestry, some mining especially coal mines in. Nova scoia: st. lawrence lowlands- sliver of land along st. lawrence river and some of the great lakes. Flat, good soil, relaively long growing season with great transportaion links (water).
