Document Summary

Living cells are chemical factories where thousands of reactions occur. Cell must be able to extract energy from fuels and convert it to a usable form. Some organisms even convert energy to light, as in bioluminescence. Energy that is not doing work but has the capacity to do so. Energy can change from one form to another. A closed system moves toward increasing disorder (entropy) as energy is dissipated from the system. Concept 8. 1: an organism"s metabolism transforms matter and energy. All of an organism"s chemical reactions are called its metabolism. A metabolic pathway begins with a specific molecule and ends with a product. Each step is catalyzed by a specific enzyme. Concept 8. 4: enzymes speed up metabolic reactions by lowering energy barriers. A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction without being consumed by the reaction. Lowers the required energy needed to begin a reaction.
