The separatists first left england for holland; soon grew dissatisfied with their quality of life and loss of identity, so they began a pilgrimage to a new life in america. In 1620, the pilgrims established themselves at plymouth in new england. Separatists, now thought of as pilgrims , came to the new world and were greatly tested. Colony was small and weak since of the original 102 settlers died of starvation and sickness in the 1st year. Leaders uneducated and unfamiliar with harsh life of wilderness frontier. Winters harsh, food scarce, colonists knowledge of farming limited, no farming tools, no draft animals, limited knowledge of firearms, no fishing skills.
