Document Summary
Treating employees as valued contributors to the organization is a key part of motivating them. Motivation- forces that energize, direct, and sustain a person"s efforts- all behavior is motivated. Must motivate people: to join the organization, remain in the organization, come to work regularly, perform- work hard to achieve high output and high quality, exhibit good citizenship- committed and satisfied who perform above the call of duty. Goal setting theory- people have conscious goals that energize them and direct them to an end. Works for job in which people have control over their performance- quality & quantity. Want to be a transformational leader not a transactional leader. Goals should not conflict with values and people should have a reason to follow them. Want smart goals- specific, measurable, achievable, results-based, and time-specific. Setting goals- providing work related goals to people stimulates motivation. Goals that motivate- most powerful goals are meaningful, noble purposes that appeal to higher values.
