Harmony: the study of tones sounding together. Chord: smallest unit of harmony; consists of three or more tones sounded together. Triad: three tone chord built in thirds. Root: the most important note of the triad; what the triad is named and based off of. Major triad: major third and perfect fifth. Diminished triad: minor third and diminished fifth. Augmented triad: major third and augmented fifth. Simple position: the appears on the bottom and the third and fifth in order. Expanded position: doubling (duplication tones in other octaves) and by spreading the chord tones over a wider range. Inverted chord: when a tone other than the root of the triad appears in the bas. Root position: when the root is in the bass. First inversion: when the third is in the bass. Second inversion: when the fifth is in the bass. Block chord: all of the notes within the chord are played at the same time.
