Native american forced migrations, cherokee people from the eastern us settled in. The shoshone suffered the same migration though to wyoming. Voluntary and force migrations have marked shoshone history. The role of women has changed in the 20th century. Traditional male roles have also changed: ex: the substitution of military service in place of traditional warrior roles. The first native american powwow was held in the late 19th century. Originally referred to religious practitioners and healing ceremonies. Modern intertribal powwow is an example of indianness. Shoshone powwow festivals are part of a powwow circuit with participants all over the us. The circular wooden arbor is the focused of the powwow activities. Spectators sit under the shelter of the arbor on permanent wooden bleachers or on folding chairs.
