Document Summary

Aspects of identity: nationality, place, ethnicity, race, class, religion, gender. Music constructs the identities of individuals and groups. Text, melody, vocal style, instrumentation and body and performance identity. National or regional heritage, language group, political affirmation, and occupation also shape identity. Minority identities and majority identities are important. People can have many identities at once. We highlight some features and downplay other of our identity. Our identities are often expressed through music. Many music traditions are associated with communities that share a background and a history. Identity symbols show strong links to past or homelands. This makes it difficult when defining music expression. Ex: cajun and creole music in st. louisiana who were french speakers from canada. Music is a symbol of identity through its sound and settings. Case study: the intercultural music of composer lei liang. Musicians were frequently persecuted by mao zedong during the cultural revolution. Composing, performing, teaching and research was brought to an official halt.
