Major depressive disorder: pervasive low mood, lack motivation, low energy, feeling of. Depressive disorders worthlessness or guilt lasting two or more weeks. No gender differences with the disorder are found in college age people or single adults (possibly due to marriage, kids or career related stress) 3 times more common in 18-29 year old over those 60 an above. Not solely caused by external events, it just comes on. Stress during childhood increases the likelihood of depression in adulthood. Diathesis model: model used to explain why some people develop depression and others don"t even given the same circumstances in life. Bi-polar disorder: substantial mood change cycle between major depression and manic episodes. Manic episodes: increased energy, sleeplessness, euphoria, irritability, delusions, increased sex drive and racing thoughts. One may engage in risky behavior during these episodes. Bi-polar disorder is linked to creativity, the following all had bi-polar disorder. Manic episodes can last a few weeks or even months.
