Is it possible to manufacture true loyalty without threatening undertones: polanyi fictitious commodities laborers won"t be loyal because they are being treated as commodities. He hopes to be rewarded with continued movement up the corporate ladder : the hierarchical and authoritarian management produces a system in which upper-management does not have to make lower-management work hard and be strict on workers. Instead, because lower-management wants to rise up in the company, they become authoritarian themselves in order to force workers to produce good results: the factories that are run in a strict fashion are more productive. That"s the bottom line. : managers and supervisors at the shop-floor level are far less interested in worker loyalty and more interested in meeting production goals. As a result, they use their power in coercive ways : these two distinct but compatible strategies serve a very important role. Workers" complaints and frustrations are maintained and dealt with on a factory level.
