L41 BIOL 181 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Stratified Squamous Epithelium, Epithelium, Keratin
Document Summary
Organ: bunch of different tissues working together to achieve a common function. Also in epidermis have pigment which protects from radiation, produce melanin which darkens skin and absorbs uv light and protects you bc uv light can damage dna. Sebaceous glands produce oil which covers skin, oily secretions also anti bacterial (glandular epithelium) Sweat glands: if temp get too hot excrete salt and ammonia which water follows, when water evaporates cools you down (glandular epithelium) Make vitamin d in skin which enhances calcium uptake from diet. Connective tissue in dermal layer and adipose in dermis (both connective tissue) provide cushioning and protects you from bruising bones. Sensory neurons in skin also protect bc if you can"t feel you can"t avoid damage (sensory neurons like heat receptors, pain receptors help you avoid further damage) All 4 types of tissue work together for common function of protection: Muscular (muscle at base of every hair and in wall of all of blood vessels)
