Dobelle visual neuroprosthetic: gives basic visual input to blind people. Camera digitizes images and transfers images directly to the visual cortex. Stimulates whiskers of the rat through electrodes in the brain, and controls motor function with electrodes to the pleasure center. Spinal cord injury: 250,000 americans with spinal cord injuries. ~11,000 new injuries occur each year in us. Sinusoidal patterns for neural firing of a single neuron for drawing circles. Each neuron has a directional preference and the neural firing rates varies based on the angle off from the preferred direction directly related to a cosine function. Behavior paradigm: the center -> out + rotation task. Micromotion of implant, neuronal process retracting, chronic inflammation and formation of gliotic sheath. Only last about 1-1. 5 years before they are attacked by foreign body response. Users: patients with intractable epilepsy requiring placement of subdural grid electrodes for seizure focus localization.
