Document Summary

Definition: relatively enduring behavior change that comes from experience. Relatively enduring - lasting, not only immediate. Types of learning: classical and operant conditioning. Beeman"s gum - association of smells of gum and cigarettes to certain person. Studied dogs and salivary reflex (what causes saliva to flow) Realized that dogs would associate environment with food so they would salivate before even getting the food. Initially thought the dogs started salivating after food touched their mouths. Dogs at first only salivated when they started eating. After a few times dogs associated the specific noises with receiving food so they would salivate upon hearing the sounds. Ex: dogs and peanut butter (pb = ucs, salivation, excitement = response) Strongest conditioning when neutral stimulus comes before unconditioned. Neutral stimulus must occur in close proximity in time to the ucs. Continual pairing of man with smell of gum and cigarettes. Conditioned stimulus: smell of gum and cigs.
