Intro of a safer vaccine has inadvertently led to a frightening spike in the deadly disease commonly known as whooping cough. Many vaccines only work for a certain amount of time. Defining the target cells capable of providing permanent humoral immunity: Naive b cell can form germinal center b cells which then form memory b cells. Naive b cells can form germinal center b cells which then form long-lived plasma cell. Germinal center b cells undergo a large number of mutations and some can improve the affinity of antibodies. This allows progression to memory b cells or long-lived plasma cells. Naive b cell can form short-lived plasma cell. Most of its mass in made up of er. Long-lived plasma cells have a much larger maximum respiration potential than short- lived plasma cells. Long-lived plasma cells have the same o2 consumption as short-lived plasma cells if pyruvate is prevented from entering the mitochondria.
